Looking back on the Season

It was all so wonderful. Every day seemed to bring Something new. Something fun, Something different. And that strikes me strange each year, because I basically follow the same recipe. Decorate, tree up, cards out, etc. I felt like I absorbed the lights, scents, and music totally.The gifts were thoughtful and special and the company I kept, the best in the world.  I didn't get to Jan 1st thinking, "where did the season go?" It was full, and fun but I am also ready for it to be put away. Once the holiday is over, the decorations just look wrong. And what once looked beautiful, takes on a garish side. Besides, my January decor is demanding to be brought out and have it's month of shining. :)  I love the bare, simple look at this time of the year. Lots of icy blues, and browns. January is calming and soothing after all the crazy fun of December. It is probably my favorite month of the year. I do not schedule anything for this month and I just cocoon myself in the winter and relish it. I am in no hurry for spring or summer. They will have their turn to thrill me. For now it is January's time to shine. Always, Kit

On to Christmas!

Up early and sipping a cup of very hot tea. I have all my lights on, hubby is still sleeping and the yard is covered in fluffy white snow. Love it! These next few days are my favorite. As my lists get smaller, I see the fruits of my labor, and I am pleased. I keep getting those squeally excited feelings deep down and they make me feel like I am a kid again. Such fun! Today I am coating anything I can find in chocolate (but mostly peanut butter crackers and pretzels) and finishing up the wine bottles for my hubby's managers. This year there are 16 of them, so that was a lot of gift bags, jingle bells and Merlot. It is a nice time of the year to say thank you to them all. We really couldn't do it without them. :) Okay, time to run. Hope everyone is enjoying their day and I hope you are getting that squeally feeling. :) Always, Kit

Our tree this year!

Did you see? Someone added a few folks to my little village. I see the Abominable and Rudolf visiting today.

Pretty bags for the ladies, candy canes for the dudes.

My girls at an ice skating birthday party for the girl on the very right.

A Calm and Lovely Moment

I am sitting here sipping mulled cider, having a couple of spritz cookies and yes, it is also softly snowing. Sounds like a Hallmark channel moment doesn't it?...LOL  Plus Mr. Christmas, Andy Williams is serenading me with, The Christmas Song. Now I have a hankering for some chestnuts. :) It has been a very busy week, filled with a gift exchange, spending the day with my youngest (she had her braces finally removed after a mouth ordeal of 5 years), my husbands company Christmas party and today was my last day of work for the season. Lots of events and all fun, but tiring. So I need this quiet moment to just sit and enjoy and think about all the wonderful things that happen during the holiday. I have been having so much fun! And when my hubby said he didn't think he had gotten enough presents for me, I easily answered that I didn't need anymore presents cause I have been getting them all month long. Not meaning the kind wrapped in boxes and paper. The kind that involves events, new memories and time with my children. The best kind. :) Always, Kit

I'm Ready!

Well, you probably know what I have been up to since my last post. I have been decorating! It involves many boxes full of treasures, lots of Christmas music and energy via Christmas cookies and Mulled Cider. A lot of folks look on it as work, but I consider it part of my "holiday experience" as I unwrap and visit with each item. My oldest items are two plastic poinsettia flowers, as a child they were always in a pewter vase when I was growing up. Now they come out each year and are tucked into one of my plants. From the early days of my marriage we purchased two very fancy garlands, on clearance of course, and they are one of the first things up and the last to come down each year. My vintage Christmas beverage glasses that I found at an estate sale for a song are a dream! We will use them tonight when we decorate the tree. Lots of odds and ends, but they all tell a story. :) And they add up to a happy holiday for me and my family. It is my pleasure to bring them out each year for a month, to let them shine and shimmer. And it is worth the time spent and the aching back for sure.
 Always, Kit

It's Here!

My most favorite week of the year. This is the week that is reserved for just me and mine. I gather my hubby and girls about me and we spend the best time together. I am lucky and have off from work from today till next Tuesday. It is a nice break and I am able to enjoy all the different aspects of the holiday. For our family, the holiday lasts for more than just one day. I just love my preps! The baking and cooking and the planning of the table decor. The cleaning and the organizing of dishes and the party favors, here on Wednesday.

 Tomorrow, I will start the day with Orange Rolls and the Macy's Parade. My ladies will come over at 5 and we eat right away because no one can wait to feast. After dinner, with our groaning waist-lines we go through the ads to see if anything catches our eye for our Black Friday shopping.* While eating our pie and sipping festive drinks we play games. Password, Apples to Apples, Uno, Pictionary, etc. And we don't care who wins. It is a great way to end the day.
* ( Yes, my youngest and I still head out at 5am. That is our tradition and we do not plan to change it, no matter what the stores are doing. We love the cold darkness, the smell of coffee and our Christmas tunes. The racing around town has us in the giggles and we do find some great bargains.)

The rest of the weekend will find me taking down my Turkey day decor and swapping it out for Christmas. Making up hot turkey sandwiches and watching football. On Sunday, my youngest and I have our annual holiday event which this year will be a White Christmas Sing-a-long! Oh, this should be a blast. I picked up two blue headbands with lots of sequins and tulle, and we are ready to rock the tunes..."Sisters, Sisters..."  Off I go, I hear my pie beeping in the kitchen and I think I want to do a little taste test on the yams. :) Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Always, Kit

Youngest playing with the decor...LOL

Last Home Game

Yesterday we attended our last home game of the season. :( We love our football and especially our local college team - the University of Montana Grizzlys! We donned our maroon and silver and bundled up, there was the threat of a snow storm, but we only ended up with a few flurries. It was cold but easily controlled by layers, hot coffee and lots of cuddling. Just when I thought my toes were never going to move again, the team would score a touchdown and I would jump up and down and the blood would flow. It was a fun time and our team won. We are hoping for the playoffs, but those games I will watch from the comfort of my home. We said good-bye to our section mates and took the lovely stroll thru campus. Another great year, another great team. Go Griz! Always, Kit

Up With Montana
Up with Montana, boys, down with the foe,
Old Montana's out for a victory;
She'll shoot her backs around the foe-men's line;
A hot time is coming now, oh, brother mine.
Up with Montana, boys, down with the foe.
Good old Grizzly'll triumph today;
and the squeal of the pig will float on the air;
from the tummy of the Grizzly bear.

Our Halloween

Today I have spent the day packing up and saying Good-bye to my decor. I just love all that orange and purple. But I can look back on a wonderful holiday. We had so much fun! Had a good amount of Trick or Treater's for our street, the weather behaved itself (no snow this year) and we had a visit from our daughters, who still dress up in costume and have to come to Mom and Dad's to show off. They did a great job and later went downtown along with all the other crazies and partied. Hubby and I ate Mummies (hot dogs in dough) watched the movie Hocus Pocus and met all the kids young and old, with lots of candy and costume compliments. Our house has become a destination for many young families and a lot of kids get their pictures snapped on our decor. We run around on Halloween Day and set up all sorts of fun, safe and colorful characters and carved pumpkins. We just love it and one lady told us, "I used to bring my children to your house and now I bring my grandchildren." That is music to our ears. And why we do it every year for the past 23 years. Always, Kit

Putting a Lot of Color into Our Days

Yes, I did indeed take my drive through the countryside but alas it was way too cold to go in the Cobra. But we had fun anyway and enjoyed each others company, the coffee and the land. And I even picked up a new table cloth as a souvenir! Here are a few pics of our mosey. I just love abandoned homesteads and we saw a lovely one on our jaunt. You wouldn't believe the weather we went thru, sun, rain and snow, all in the space of hour.

Here I am waving at all of you!

You wanted to see some "color" from our town too, so hubby took a run up to the M on top of Mount Sentinel and snapped some of our town. That is Main Hall on the U of M campus.

And I took the easy route and snapped some color in my yard. This is at it's peak.

Ginnala Maple

Hubby took these two, aren't they so pretty!?

Well, there you have it. Color in Montana. Quite makes me smile everyday.  :) Always, Kit

Fall Days

This time of year I just adore driving all over town. Youngest calls and needs to pick some items up from the store? No problem. Oldest needs a ride to get her truck from the tire shop? Sure! Hubby needs some Gator-aid? Why not. I take new routes each time and discover new trees and new Halloween decorations and it just makes me feel so good. The colors are really starting to pop here in town. I am hoping they hang on for a little bit. Hubby and I have 4 days off next week, and I am thinking I would love to take a drive to Helena to see the "color". All bundled up in our winter coats and hats, with driving blankets, we will head out in the Cobra. Seeing the countryside, without the hindrance of a car roof is spectacular. The air is brisk, the company is the best and the rolling hills and farmland are brilliant in orange and gold. A perfect way to spend a day. Always, Kit
Trying to do my best impression of a "car girl".....LOL

This and That

Wind is kicking up. Been chilly and rainy today, so I have had the fireplace going even tho I am still running around in shorts. :) I have chicken baking in the oven and it smells wonderful. I taped the Bronco game so we will watch that as we eat dinner. A favorite thing for us to do. During the week, we watch Jeopardy and I gain tidbits of info over peas and biscuits. Been a productive day, my favorite kind. When I get ready for bed each night, I like to look back on the day and know I have gotten some things done and that it felt good.
  • So far today I took down all my decor from the Summer and got my living room ready for tomorrow. And Halloween! I go from blue and greens to lots of black, orange and purple. Quite the difference and quite pretty.
  •  A new picture hangs in the bathroom (my oldest took it on her travels and I just love it) See it below.
  • The geraniums I over winter, are trimmed and watered and lending some great color to my craft room. And the large fern that graces the patio is now nice and happy in the front window and safe from chilling frosts.
Off I go, time to sit back and relax and do a little mending. :) Always, Kit

The Weekend!

I slept 11 hours last night. And it felt soooo good. Great dreams, good temperature, and oh so cozy. Yesterday I told the hubby that I didn't want to do anything on Saturday, but after such a great night, I wanted to go yard saling. And we did! It was such fun. This late in the season, folks are getting creative with their wares. Someone took a real kitchen drawer and had all sorts of spatulas, slotted spoons and can openers in it and offered it as a "complete drawer of utensils". Made me laugh! I spotted a bowl filled with metal and glass salt and pepper shakers (some still full of product...LOL) and tooth pick holders labeled, "a bowl full of little bits - $1.00", and that one I bought. I need shakers at work, and the others can be used at home or as little vases. Found a strange religious picture that spoke to me for 50 cents, and an embroidered rag doll in a free box. I just had to buy her. No one should be relegated to a free box. My hubby said her face look worried. But not anymore. :) Finally, a Shiny Brite Christmas ornament box with tiny faded glass bells called my name and I couldn't resist.

So I am glad I went. Now I plan to just do some relaxing the rest of the day and tonight my U of M Griz football team are playing North Dakota. They are awfully good, so wish my team luck.  Always, Kit

Has it only been two weeks?!!

I am back at it and a bit exhausted. And tho my pride is a bit hurt (aren't I suppose to be Wonder Woman?) I am glad to be at my school, cooking up yummy things to eat and dispensing hugs and smiles. I have to admit, I thought it would be a breeze. It's been 5 months! But it is easy to ignore all the stats saying it takes a year to get back to normal, one has to gradually build their stamina up, Rome wasn't built in a day, etc. So naps have been re-instated, yard work curtailed and reading is my number one hobby. It does feel so good to be back, in a routine, in my own special space and seeing all the those faces that I missed so much last year. I just need to be realistic and know it is going to take a little time to get my groove back. But I am up to the challenge, cause I don't want anyone else taking care of my "kids", I want it to be me that they see each morn. :) Always, Kit

My wonderful Back To School kit that my youngest gave to me on the first day. Everything I need to start my year, plus a whole bunch of love!

My Gardens 2013

As my summer winds down and I get ready to go back to work, I took a wander thru my yard and snapped some pics. Noting good areas, areas that need some work and then was amazed and quite pleased at how the garden has evolved thru the years. When we arrived, there was nothing in it but two apple trees, a clothesline and an empty veggie patch. I have been having fun with it for 23 years now. Always, Kit

Chick's N Chaps 2013

This is an annual event I am very proud to attend each year. It is a breast cancer fundraiser where only 250 lucky women are allowed to attend. We have a rodeo clinic, lots of great food, beer and wine and silent and live auctions, and wonderful goodie bags and t-shirts. I am joined each year by my lovely and wonderful daughter, Em, and this year was so much more special because of battling my own cancer this past spring. We had such a blast! Visiting with cowboys, stuffing our faces and rocking to the country music. By the end of the day (and it's a long one) we have made 248 new friends and are already talking about next year's event. Hmmm, we had special beaded bracelets for this year's bling, what can I find for next year's party? :) Always, Kit

Party bus, beaded bracelets in pink and salmon, lovely cowgirl boot, my lovely Em.
Great decor at each table!
Great food! Sliders, meat on a stick, Great company! Handsome cowboys.
We learned to rope, ride a bull, and pose prettily with hunky cowboys. :)

We are all smiles and sunburn!
