Anne of Green Gables ~ Simple Pleasures

I am joining for the first time, Dayle over at A Collection Of This and That, for Simple Pleasures. I spent this summer re-reading the Little House series and when it was all done, I was bummed. Enter, a bored lady with a remote control looking for anything to while away an hour or two, and I came across a re-run of the wonderful series, Anne of Green Gables (not the animated one, the brilliant one with Megan Follows and Colleen Dewhurst). And as I watched it occurred to me, I had never read any of the books. Really? How could that have happened! Well, I fixed this situation quickly and headed to a wonderful store called the Book Exchange. I purchased the first three books (all for under the price of $6.00) and began my wonderful journey to Prince Edward Island. I want to savor the books, so I only read them right before I go to bed. I am just starting Book 2, and with the descriptions of cherry trees, village life and puffed sleeves, it makes for the sweetest of dreams. Always, Kit

Welcome to Simple Pleasures! What a joy to have you join in today! Right off, I can see we're kindred spirits. "Little House" is one of my favorite sets of books, and "Green Gables" is one of my favorite movies ... all umpteen hours of it. :) Admittedly, I've not read the books, so ... that'll have to change.

Wonderful! I have a numberof pupils who have taken on some of the Little House books on my advice, and I bought myself a new set recently as my childhood ones were falling apart. The new ones are ever so pretty but will never have the innocence of my faded old set, though. I did read Anne when I was a child and picked up a set secondhand a while back in case my pupils would like it. But now I think the best thing to do would be to read it again myself! Thank you.

I love reading books like that and watching BBC series on you-tube too.

Have a great day and a wonderful weekend.

Anne of Green Gables is my absolute favorite. And every winter the kids and I watch a marathon run of all three movies. And everytime Mathew dies, we cry. Enjoy your reading.

You know, I don't think I read the books either but I totally love this tv series with Meghan Follows and Colleen Dewhurst as well as the rest of the cast. I cry every time I watch it. What a great story, great series, great cast of characters! My elderly mother-in-law and I sat down and watched the first two series last spring. She had never seen it but enjoyed it immensely. Thanks for sharing!! Have fun reading and getting lost in Prince Edward Island :)

Being Ann "without the e", this was a childhood favorite of mine. I just love Anne Shirley! The Megan Followes mini-series was fantastic and I remember watching when my son was just a baby. I bought the series and years later my kids watched it with me. I too re-read the entire book series after watching Megan play Anne. And please, nobody play Matthew better than Richard Farnsworth. Kit, there is an old black and white version that is quite good as well - you may want to check it out! Ann

Kit,
I have just become a follower as I can see we have much in common. I read Anne of Green Gables when I was a child and was immediately enchanted with Anne Shirley. Loved Anne of Windy Poplars also.

There are quite a few of them, I think I have read all of them. I ADORE them and read them at bedtime. I find them so relaxing, it takes me to a world I wish I lived in at times. Nice to meet you from Simple Pleasures.
Blessings,

I too caught episodes of Anne of Green Gables on PBS as a kid. I loved it. I always thought it was magical.

I actually bought the whole series on DVD (AGG)... LOVE it! I read the book as a kid and still read through it every 10 years or so. You just can't beat it. I'm a Huge Little House fan too. When my daughter was little we read a chapter every night. :)
